The contents page I am going to analyze is Uncut. The contents page for this magazine is very simple and straight forward. It doesn't have a wide variety of colours and sticks to simple colours like red, gold and silver. The image in the corner of the page is large and is promoting a article on page 48. The colour scheme is also the house theme and ties in with the front cover.

Also the text is very small on this contents page this is clearly so the can get all the articles into the one page spread. This magazine has 112 pages of articles and writing.

Down the side of the contents page is the information about the editor this takes up the full side of the page. This must be key to the contents page although it does limit the space for detail about the articles.

The image in the contents page uses Dyer: 'How we are seen determines how we are treated' the models are stood in such a way it makes them seem as just an image.

From this contents page I may use the section of in this issue and the way it is laid out and I also might use the reviews collum.

Research: Inspirations and ideas.

My inspirations for this media magazine is my love for indie rock bands like Imagine dragons, Fall out boy and other Indie rock.

My hobbies consist of listening to this genre whilst, horse riding, jogging and just chilling at home.

I spend a lot of my time with my earphones in and my music on full blast. I do this as music is my escape from reality and my freedom. I enjoy listening to this music as is it brings my family together as they all love this genre just as much as me.

I intend to create a simple/fun and creative magazine based around my favourite genre and the music I love. My contents page will be a double spread with lots of images, texts and many different articles to entice the reader. My dps will be based around a artist I will create this will also be a double page spread with sophisticated yet easy to understand text.

This is a prezi I created to show the expanding institution of  Bauer media group.

I have chosen Bauer media as an institution as I believe it has no Indie Rock magazines in the age range I have chosen. I believe Bauer has lots of other magazines which are close to the genre I have chosen to do but no specific to the genre I have chosen.

I have chosen this contents page due to the way it is laid out. I like the fact the background is plain it attracts the eyes to bright colours of the writing. Also the model is in front of the banner at the top.
The image breaks conventions as she is not looking into camera. The text is wrapped around her body which is effective. The black dress and pearls represent maturity and sophistication. This links to the pull quote as she refers to her age "age-old problem" and it is clear the article will appeal to an older TA.

The red font stands out and indicates clearly the page umbers. Red and grey contrast and it adds the connotation of passion and energy. Grey is interesting as a background colour as she is of an age that could be considered grey however her hair is dyed red and is youthful and lively. She could be seen as an inspiration for older musicians.

The model is influencing the way the writing is written on the page this is because they have used her pose to influence how far the writing is over the screen.

The models hair also ties into the colour scheme of the contents page as the numbers and important words and lines are all in red.

This contents is plain and simple but is very eye catching due to this design. The use of red thin lines is also effective and divides the page clearly. Institutional details are included: date and issue. There are a range of features and there is quite a lot of detail about each one. The writing is colloquial yet formal "collective spirit" and appeals to a wide TA.


I may use the way the model is stood facing away from the camera and also her pose, I may use the simplistic design from this and the way the colours work together.

According to Dyer's : 'How we are seen determines how we are treated'. ' a star is a image, not a real person.' Eminem is clearly posed here to show a strong independent man in this image. Also he is surrounded by red and black writing this is also showing the colour of danger and strength. The masthead is very outstanding in this front cover as it is behind the model, this is breaking one of the conventions of a magazine it is also outstanding as some of the text is also behind the model. This brings all eyes onto the model and draws the eyes to the models torso and tattoos. This could also be used to represent Mulvey's  but twisted, to say that males do things to attract women and the female TA.

The magazine has also used symbolic signs, this is the use of the cross around Eminem's neck this represents God or religion. They also use iconic signs - the tattoos, the cross, the black t shirt, the crossed arms and expression, these work together to represent anger or disgust.

From this magazine I may use the way the front cover is busy and boldly laid out in my own magazine.

Genre, Representation, Audience& language

Genre:
Genres can be seen as 'a means of controlling demand' (Neale 1980, 55).

The genre may be considered as a practical device for helping any mass medium to produce consistently and efficiently and to relate its production to the expectations of its customers. Since it is also a practical device for enabling individual media users to plan their choices, it can be considered as a mechanism for ordering the relations between the two main parties to mass communication. (McQuail 1987, 200)

Every genre positions those who participate in a text of that kind: as interviewer or interviewee, as listener or storyteller, as a reader or a writer, as a person interested in political matters, as someone to be instructed or as someone who instructs; each of these positioning implies different possibilities for response and for action. Each written text provides a 'reading position' for readers, a position constructed by the writer for the 'ideal reader' of the text. (Kress 1988, 107)

John Hartley suggests that 'we need to understand genre as a property of the relations between texts' (O'Sullivan et al. 1994, 128)

 'genres only exist in so far as a social group declares and enforces the rules that constitute them' (Hodge & Kress 1988, 7),


Representation:

Stuart Hall (1997:61): Defines representation as 'the process by which members of a culture use language to provide meaning'. From this meaning he says, we can already see that. 'Representation' cannot possible be a fixed, unchangeable notion.

Bulmer&Katz: individuals might choose and use a text for the following purposes (ie uses and gratifications):

Diversion - escape from everyday problems and routine.

Personal Relationships - using the media for emotional and other interaction, eg) substituting soap operas for family life

Personal Identity - finding yourself reflected in texts, learning behaviour and values from texts

Surveillance - Information which could be useful for living eg) weather reports, financial news, holiday bargains

I believe the costumes have been chosen to go with the Feature 'Liam's on a mission' this could relate to the mission in 1969 to the moon. This is why the models are all dressed in old space suits. Also one model is holding a Union Jack. This is Iconic as it links to Britain and how it is a country the models are from. The set design is of the moon this was chosen to show how their music is loved world wide and the iconic side of the Globe or our world is behind them showing how they travel around the world to play their music. The pose's of the models are all to extenuate their music and how they play. Most models are looking away from the camera and at their instruments showing how devoted they truly are.

From this magazine I may use the 2 page front cover whilst keeping it simple and artistic.

The magazine also breaks conventions due to the fact some of the artists are looking away from the camera.
