Planning: Completed DPS

My DPS is based on a interview style due to my TA results. I have asked questions which I believe are relevant to my genre and magazine with a total of 1287 words.

So Elisha Mae how long have you been creating music and what brought you into the music business?

I think from being a child I got into the idea of singing and always dreamed about standing in front of hundreds of people singing my own songs and seeing people rocking out. I know that all the hours I used to spend in front of the mirror singing away, terribly may I add, to some amazing artists really made the dream come alive. Although I am a very inexperienced artist with only a year behind my career I believe that I don’t really show it with some of my songs.

What was the first song you sung live and how did that make you feel?

I remember about two years back stood in an old pub shaking terribly due to fear and trying to focus on my first song “Broken Dreams” it wasn't prefect and neither was my style. I was so undecided with which genre I wanted to focus my music on that I could tell my performance and the message I wanted to get through to all the drunken men and women sat judging me wasn’t displayed like I so desired. I was so nervous and my voice was so shaky I could tell my audience were getting bored and uninterested. Although I must say once I finished that traumatic experience and to hear the drunken cheers and claps of the people who had stuck by and listened made me feel amazing. I remember through that night debating if I could ever do that again, but the feeling I got inside hearing those cheers just made me want more and to do it all over again.

What are your songs about?

My songs are about me and how from that first experience singing live I have become more of a strong and independent woman. Showing my fans that no matter what people think of you, you can differently become the person you've always wanted to. And even if you fall down, if you fail at your goals, you have to pick you self-up and keep trying otherwise what was the point in setting those dreams for yourself. My songs are about how everyone goes through heart breaks, traumatic times and times we all want to forget, but no matter what happened in the past we will always be strong and fight on for what we desire.

If you had the opportunity to change the music industry what would you change?

I would change the fact that Indie Rock as a genre seems to be a man’s world and how hard it is for a woman to be taken seriously in this genre with the music she produces. I would also change how difficult it is for a young woman or artist to be seen by the world and by the music industry. I have tried so hard for so many years to be signed by a big company but no one wants to know, due to my age and inexperience. I wish people would just give some artists a chance because many of us young artists can produce new exciting music the world wants and needs.

Where would you like to see yourself in the next 5 years? What are your ambitions?

In the next 5 years? That’s difficult…I think I would like to see my-self as a known artist with an abundance of fans, with a big line up of concerts and some tours across the globe. I’d like to see my-self with a multiracial fan group and being known across the globe even if it’s by a few fans here and there. I’d love to be known for my music and strong image and not for bad reasons. In 5 years I’d like to see my-self being signed by a major company which will let me express my music and my style in my own way, to be able to show my family and few fans that I can do it and I will get my name out there one day. Even if it does take me 5 years.

What did you do before you got into the music industry?

Before I got into the music industry I was focused on my horse and maintaining my riding and competitions.  I had a part time job in a kitchens near where I live working from 4-9 every night after college. I was set on the idea of being known by many but didn't know how, for a while I had my heart set on being a professional horse rider and putting my name and Roman’s Dream out there but the more I tried to focus I found my-self being more and more in love with the idea of expressing my-self through music. Even if it was just featuring in someone’s music video.

Roman’s Dream? Is that your horse?

Yes Roman’s Dream is my horse I've owned him ever since he was a foal and now at 4 years old he is a gentle man, to me and to my friends who ride him. I have worked so hard to bring him to where he is now and I honestly don’t know what I’d do without him and his love and comfort. I spend most of my weekends riding around the fields where I live just exploring the nature in the woods and still learning many things about my companion. My self and Roman have had a few hiccups together but as a rider I do expect that, especially with him being a young gelding.

Is there anyone special you want to say thank you to?

Yes I’d love to say thank you to my ever so supportive boyfriend Joshua who has been with me now for 2 years! He is honestly my biggest fan and my inspiration for some of my songs. Also I’d like to say thank you to my family and my friends without their push I don’t believe I’d be where I am now my music is my world and I want to show that in my songs and my performance.

Do you have your own website? And where can fans purchase your music?

Yes I do have my own website ElishaMaeupandcoming.com fans can post what they thought of a concert if they attended and how they feel about my music. On my website my fans can find details of my next concerts where to buy tickets from and if I am an act on a tour. I had one young girl comment and say my music has helped her over come so many obstacles in her life and she is now back on track to reaching her dream. This honestly made me feel so amazing knowing my music has helped people with reaching their dreams, it’s honestly a feeling I can’t express in words. For my fans they can either download my music off the website or through iTunes. I wanted to make it easy for people to download my music, there is also many videos of me singing on YouTube for fans to access and listen to.

Elisha I must say it had been an honour to speak with you today and to get to know with you. I wish you truly the best with your music career and I hope to see you play live soon.

Thank you Abigail it has been a privilege to speak to you and to help my-self get known. For my fans out there my next live show will be on February 21st 2016 at Sheffield Arena I hope to see all of you there.

Research: Basis for my DPS

For my DPS I want it to be based around a interview and asking my artist to answer questions in which all will be easy and yet sophisticated to read. I will ask lots of questions, some relating around my artists hobbies and interests and as I am basing my artist around my closest friend I wanted to add the aspect of horse riding into my article. This is due to the fact that I have spent most of my life around horses and I accommodate horses with indie due to the idea of a woman stood next to a beautify groomed horse.

With this idea I have decided to take some images with my friend and her horse to use in my DPS these will not be my main image for my DPS but following the evaluation of the Dolly DPS I wanted to use the way the images have been used to show the things my artists love to do when she's out of the studio.

I know these images are not perfect and I do hope to go out again with my friend to take more images of her and her horse "Roman's Dream" I love the effects I have used on my camera to bring these crisp beautiful images. I do know that I did not take into account 3 thirds although if I was to edit these images I would take away some of the colour in the bottom image as I believe there is too much colour in the foreground when I just wanted the silhouette of the image to shine through. I believe with the bottom image because I have placed the sun behind the image it draws your eyes to the horse and my model. Also with the black and white image I believe the sun was placed in the wrong position as it only draws attention to the horses neck and not his face and the model.

Here are some of the images I have taken and hope to use:

Research: TA Analysis

When I gathered my results I found some answers slightly surprising although some were very obvious. I noticed that most of the people I asked did read gossip or any. I don't believe that the answer "any" was very well understood by my TA, this is my own fault for not giving options for people to choose. I was glad to hear that most of my ta audience like reading interviews this is good for me as my DPS was going to be related around a interview.

Although I didn't really want to write or add lifestyle features to my magazine although many of my ta wanted this. Although I do believe that for teenagers life style tips can be seen as a need. For my third question I asked people if they wanted free downloads for music, most of my TA group said yes which I was very happy about as from my personally expectations a teen music magazine should include some sort of free downloads from itunes or spotify.

One thing which did make me surprised was how much students or teenagers would pay for a music magazine I know from personally experience many teenagers don't receive a lot of money for items like magazines this is why I think that £1-£3 is a good price range for my magazine as most of my ta said that they would pay that and although the feel of my magazine might be cheep it will be jammed packed full of items and gossip I hope my readers will love.

I did ask my TA if they wanted a simple or a busy front cover and contents page, nearly all of my ta wanted a simplistic front cover which I agree with as a too busy front cover can be off putting and a simplistic contents can also be very beautiful.

I asked my audience if they wanted games, quiz's and competitions most people said no to these questions which I did slightly expect this answer and I am grateful for these answers I understand as people have said this.

Research: Front cover 8

I have chosen to analyse this magazine as it relates to my genre. First impressions of this magazine are that it is very busy and interesting. I can clearly tell from this magazine that it is aimed at a female audience from the house style and from the way the models are stood.

The front cover is very busy and the mast head is placed behind the models. this is breaking conventions. Also there is a lot of text on the front cover this is great as it shows the different articles to be included in this magazine.

The model's eyes are covered and this breaks conventions I like this idea as it makes them seem more like a rocker this incorporated Dyer's theory of "an artist is only a image" as all the models are clearly showing themselves as just items and not real people.

I believe the colour of the writing is pink due to the fact that the models seem to be incorporating Mulvey's theory of that 'women do things for male attention' this is showing that these males are posing and acting this way for female attention.

From this front cover I may use the colours used, if I am going to create a magazine for females I may use gender oriented colours.

Research: Contents 6

I have chosen to analyse this contents page as the magazine it is from relates to the genre I have chosen. I like this contents page as the main articles are clearly highlighted with images. Also there is a small  section headlined "regulars" I like this feature as it makes it easy for the reader to find the articles they like to read.

Also the images on the contents page clearly relate to the images on the front cover of the magazine and with the house style of the magazine this is because the main colour scheme of the magazine is white and red and you can clearly work this out from the contents page.

I also noticed the subscribe section I like this as it shows where the reader can subscribe and get magazines cheaper. I like this idea as it could make more people want to read/purchase a magazine due to this feature.

I may use the 1 page contents idea, the layout in columns and section and the clear and easy reading.

Research: DPS 3

This Dps is from Classic Rock magazine.
This DPS is about Dolly Parton and it starts on page 38. This article is of a vintage style and is approximately 7 pages long with over 9000 words and for the opening of the DPS there is a approx 700 words. This layout appeals to an older Ta as there is more sophisticated words and lots of text to read. I also believe this DPS has a double audience for the younger people who want to read about this amazing woman.
David Morley suggests that media appeal to different social media groups and are influenced by ideology social change. This is reflected in this dps as although the article has a very vintage style is it filled with images for a younger reader.
For the start of the article there is a full A4 image of Dolly this is clearly an old image of her as it is in black and white with the caption “Blonde Ambition: Dolly set out to do things her own way” This is a very innocent image of Dolly with her iconic show girl smile. One the next page the article begins this page only features 2 columns which are spaced out, these two columns take up about half of the page
whereas the rest is featured with images of  Dolly throughout her life. As the dps goes on the images seem to fade or get smaller whereas the text becomes more detailed and longer with small sections between columns with writing from other singers and actresses describing Dolly and her bubbly personality.

The article clearly progresses through Dolly’s life from when she started out singing in 1975 to now where she is still at the top of her game. One the first page of the dps the colour scheme or house style of this is very neutral with only primary colours popping a dash of sparkle. The TA is intended to know Dolly and her style although there is an introduction for people who don’t. The style of the dps is very vintage and black and white although the images are used to clearly draw attention to her face and her smile.

From this DPS I may use the amount of images used to draw attention to the artist and black and white to draw the reader's eye to the artist and not the background.
